Mojave Desert-Rt 66

The MojaveDesert covers a vast part of southern California. It includes America'sHighway, Rt. 66 and towns that grew up and faded along that route. Whenpresident Eisenhower signed the bill creating the US Interstate system it meantthe end of the old highways. Rt 40 came through California leaving the towns, motels, gas stations of Rt. 66 to the ravages of the desert wind and sand. Today someof these towns are rebuilding, but many have been taken over by the desert. Theseimages include the area that stretches from Barstow to the Arizona border inNeedles, down to Lucerne Valley and Vidal's Crossing.
