The Santiago Calatrava designed World Trade Center Transportation hub in New York City was unveiled in 2014. Commonly called The Oculus, it has been described many different ways. I see steel wings reaching up from the ribs that form the central hall. It's a space that defies any traditional form of architecture, but then doesn’t all of Calatrava’s work? These shots were taken when it was newly opened on a stark winter day, both early and late in the day. Light transforms this building into many things, depending on time of day or night or external weather conditions.
