Architectural Abstracts
Architecture invites us to see the built environment from many perspectives. I am drawn to the details—the interplay of shape and negative space created by the architect—and have long valued negative space as a powerful design element. Architects begin with empty space, then introduce solid forms that shape the air above and the land around us. Each structure establishes its own distinctive presence while allowing the surrounding sky, ground and spaces between buildings to reveal the full character of the design.
My photographs explore this same relationship between shape and form. By isolating carefully chosen details within an architectural structure, I create fresh compositions and offer a new perspective on the designer’s vision. Through considered framing and the expressive use of light and shadow, I seek out the quiet beauty in elements that are often overlooked, revealing the details that give larger structures their distinctive character.
