Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles
Frank Gehry’s landmark Walt Disney Concert Hall has reshaped the architectural identity of downtown Los Angeles and transformed the way a cultural building can inhabit the urban landscape. Clad in sweeping planes of stainless steel, its sculptural forms unfurl like sails, petals, and wings, rising dramatically against the sky. As daylight moves across the building, the reflective surfaces shift in tone and intensity, continually redefining its curves, edges, and monumental silhouette.
Over the course of a year, I photographed the building in an extensive range of atmospheric and lighting conditions—from the soft illumination of dawn to the deep contrasts of dusk, and from clear blue skies to muted, overcast days. Each change in weather and light revealed a different expression of the architecture, allowing its metallic surfaces and fluid geometry to appear alternately luminous, restrained, monumental, and ethereal.
