Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família rises above Barcelona as a visionary synthesis of architecture, nature, and spiritual symbolism. Conceived on a monumental scale and shaped by generations of craftsmanship, the basilica departs from the weight and darkness traditionally associated with Gothic churches. Instead, branching, palm-like columns ascend into a luminous vault 148 feet above the floor, forming a stone canopy that evokes the sheltering calm of a forest. Stained-glass portals filter sunlight into radiant fields of colour, softening the building’s imposing scale and filling the interior with a profound sense of serenity.
This series explores the completed interior, which I began photographing around 2010. I was captivated by the tension between the structural power of Gaudí’s forms and the remarkable sense of lightness within the space they define. In black and white, the architecture becomes balanced and graphic, revealing the rhythm of the columns, vaults, and intersecting lines. In colour, the interior expands into an immersive spectacle of luminous glass, soaring geometry, and extraordinary spatial beauty.
